Tortenschachtel, 2014

The Berliner Platz in Ludwigshafen has for several years now included disused buildings: a former shopping mall, rechristened the 'Tortenschachtel’ (the cake box) by locals. For three months, the square will host an art exhibition, in which Ludwigshafen citizens are invited to make use of a three by eight meter white construction hoarding for showcasing their work. The closed shape of the architecture will be echoed in the sculptural form, hence the title for the installation: ‘Tortenschachtel’.The project Hack & the City, initiated by the Wilhelm Hack Museum, asks the question: “How can citizens help shape their city creatively” The sculpture serves as a platform for all kinds of artistic expression, ranging from graffiti to painting and collage – anything goes, ideas are not limited. For the life of the project, the square and the city will thus be reclaimed by its inhabitants.
