According to the theory and practice of Johannes Itten, colour is among the most impressive and most characteristic qualities of design. In the art context, however, it not only serves the purpose of aestheticization but, even more importantly, as a means of attracting attention and evoking emotion. Itten’s depiction models are based on a twelve-part “colour sphere” that corresponds to the twelve months of the year and assigns each month an “easily imaginable” colour with a clear relationship to the subsequent colours.Taking this twelve-part colour cycle as a point of departure, Levent Kunt is changing the substation on Karlsplatz. As the seasons progress, the colour of the building and with it the square’s appearance transform.
